Notices blog
How has your week been? I hope you have been able to make the most of these quieter times and have one eye to the joyful news that Christmas reminds us of, the birth of Christ. We are really blessed this week that our service is being led by Andy with readings from his wife, Ruth. The service has already been uploaded to our website so take a look anytime.
We are also introducing a new initiative this week "Crumbs from the table", with the help of local supermarkets we are hoping to support around 30 local families who would benefit from some essential food this Christmas. The school has identified those in need and we are keen to share some love and compassion this year. It would be great if you could support this and more details can be found here http://www.elburtonmethodist.org.uk/cftt. We are essentially asking if you would pledge to contribute to this scheme so that we can provide a bag of goodies later in December.
What about our week, well Josh finished his bike ability and got a certificate for his very damp bike riding efforts; it rained a lot! Beth has been busy learning to knit with Helen who is making a blanket or a scarf, I can't remember which and I have several times got it wrong so not going to ask again. Lets hope she doesn't read this :-)
It is the Sunday before Advent and many of the lectionary readings now turn to the topic of the Jesus' return in power and glory. These are not doom and gloom texts, instead they are pointers to a happier time when suffering and pain will have passed away. As followers of Christ these are times we can look forward to. Looking forward to happier times is something we have often talked about over the last few months. There is another passage set this week from Psalm 95
O come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
This passsage speaks for itself and is a reminder of God's constancy. It reminds us that he is always to be praised, that we should find space at home in these times to worship the God of love who loves us. We should make a joyfull noise in our homes for him! It contains also those re-assuring words "In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains..." everthing is his, he is greater than all of it! This psalm underpins something I often say which is that all is well as the God of creation, the God overall is in command!
May that same God of creation, of love, of hope, of happy tomorrows fill you with his love and grace today, tomorrow and always!
With our love!
Jon, Helen, Josh and Beth

This week we are looking at the parable of the talents, it's one of those passages where we are spoilt for choice as to the message. It will have meant one thing to it's original listeners and it can be a range of things to you and I. It all depends on where we are today and where we are in our Christian journey. There are messages of encouragement, a message to take chances for the sake of others, a reminder as to who owns the fruits of our labours and more besides. Well we will explore all of that during the video. As an extra encouragement to watch we have a brilliant Sketch from Denise and her family and I must say a big thank you to them. it's not easy to get the puppets in action at home but they have done a fab job. Also a massive thank you to Helen for leading our musical worship. My offer to sing while you play still stands :-) (Lyrics are at the bottom of this email if you want to sing along!).
I am sure many of us have also had plans change in the last few weeks, lockdown has brought an abrupt end to many ideas of social gathering. We had been planning to attend a 65th birthday party this weekend (I won't embarrass my mum by mentioning her by name). You will, I am sure have had your own plans that have now changed. The Church had planned to regather in person on November 29th, sadly that cannot be, but more details below on what we are planning next. Although we can not meet in person we can meet here on-line and in that we are blessed. There are some who do not have that blessing.
The Carhart household has been a hive of activity this weekend, we have been busy recording and editing on Saturday while the children have built new structures in minecraft. Beth has been delivering presents around the house from a cardboard box, and Josh has been doing lots of homework. Next week there is some fun lined up for Josh as the school have their bikeabiltiy week, so bike's to school!
Please do read on for details of the re-opening.
With our love!

This week Tristan is leading our morning worship and I hope you will be able to join him via the video page on our website or Facebook. Sue is leading our evening worship so do join us on Zoom at 6:30.
I don't know if you have been following the American election results. Josh and I have been following with great interest the full complexity of the system and the disputes as they unfold. It's good to debate and for people of different opinions to settle their views through elections. However, in times such as these I hope and pray the end of this election will result in unity. Communities, Countries and The World need to work together at such times. So it's more important than ever that we remember all the things we have in common and the bonds we share. As a Church our bonds are stronger than links of steel. You and I are bound together by Christ, we are held each as a part of the body of Christ. Let's Praise God for that.
As well as following the election we have had a fun week. Josh and Beth are building in Minecraft and by the time the lockdown is over they may have architected an entire city! School continues and the children had the opportunity this week to support the Poppy appeal by purchasing various poppy appeal items in class. It was lovely to see how excited they both were to take their coins and buy pencils and rubbers etc. Beth took a shopping list - so sweet!
A few things to draw you attention to in this week's notices. Firstly, there will be a Zoom service this Sunday evening, details below. Secondly, there has been a security issue at the premises this week, more details in this sheet. Thirdly, Andy is publishing a daily devotional through lockdown and you can read this on our Facebook page (You don't need a Facebook account to do that). Finally, Ann Middleton has produced an amazing video concerning rememberance. You can fnid it on our Facebook page and via the link below.

SECURITY - From Tony
On arriving for the working party on Wednesday 04.11.20 at 09:10 the Church front door was found to be unlocked although no one else was in the building.
This is by no means the first time this has happened. As far as could be seen no damage or theft took place but it could have been a very different story.
What is wrong with our keyholders that they cannot secure the premises on departure?

I hope many of you will be able to join us on-line as usual this Sunday. Our service is being led by Tristan and I think he will be bringing us Leviticus. I'm looking forward to watching it this morning. Hope you will be able to catch the service, links are below.
In this week's lectionary there is also Psalm 90. It contains this portion:
"Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days."
Even though restrictions are lighter in our part of the world and many of us are able to get out and about, life is still a new challenge and different. I know some of you still find yourselves very much home alone. The passage immediately made me think of the idea that God's love, his wonderful unending love, is sufficient for all our needs and all our situations. Sometimes we just need to pause and focus on that fact. Secondly it tugged my mind to think about rejoicing every day. That is a really hard ask, but a valid one. We should seek to count our blessings and be joyful in them, making the most of each day as best we can. This week we did exactly that and after school we had an end of term disco. Just the four of us, music, party games, party tea and disco lights. Click the link below to see a video.
http://www.elburtonmethodist.org.uk/images/Notices/CarhartDisco.mp4
So we have tried this week to make the most of our day and I hope you will be able to find the opportunity to do the same.
The Church council met this week on Zoom and have decided to offer more Zoom services in the evenings. You can find details of this in the text below from Di. Equally the council have directed the stewards and property team to consider a physical opening in November, again details below.
Well there we are, it is half term and I am ready for a rest as are Helen and the children. Let's hope the weather improves, Josh wants to explore Dartmoor. I'd better find my compass :)
May the God of love bless you with days full of blessings counted and time spent in his presence.
With our love!

HARVEST As well as the generous Harvest donations of food for the Food Bank, the wonderful amount of 330 pounds was given in money, which the treasurer will send to help in the great work that the FoodBank does. Once more EMC has shown it's generosity to those less fortunate than ourselves.
A SCAM
We have been asked by Tony to share this with you:
Phone scam: People get an automated call informing them that "Due to illegal activities, their access to the Internet is going to be removed within the next few hours", or similar words. They are then informed and invited to contact their Internet supplier by pressing 1. DON'T PRESS ANYTHING. JUST HANG UP.
Church building security
Some time between noon on Thursday 3rd September 2020 and the morning of Monday 7th September 2020 and again between Thursday 1st October and Tuesday 6th October 2020 one of our keyholders entered the building by the car park doors but when they left they omitted to set the top and bottom bolts before locking the rear door. This meant that the doors could be pulled open and anyone could enter the building. These top and bottom locks must to set before leaving and locking the building securely.

Half term has been a combination of rest and fun, the weather has made some of our plans more difficult but it's still been fun :-) Josh has had a haircut and now looks ready for action, and I have regrouted the kitchen worktop, oooh I hear you cry, will the excitement never end!
Helen seems to be on a knitting frenzy I don't know what she has been making but I am hoping for something warm to wear.
One of our fun activities has been a short treasure hunt around the village. If you fancy having a go yourself you can find the clues we used here on the church website.

This week in the service we are looking at Journeys. We have all doubtless been on a long journey and experienced the various practical aspects. If you have been anywhere with me, whether for work or pleasure you will know that getting lost is the primary characteristic of my journeys. I have lost the hire car in High Wycombe, walked 8 miles in a complete and repetitive loop in East London, failed to find my hotel in Spain (despite my excellent 7 words of Spanish) and driven more times around heathrow in a perfect circle than I am prepared to admit. Some of you have experienced this first hand of course, you know who you are! Physical journeys are a great metaphor for the Christian faith journey that we are all on. What we need in a real journey is a map, in our faith journey we get even better directions. Those directions come in three ways: We get them through the Bible - it is a great source of truth and wisdom but we need to spend time with it to understand it. Secondly, there is those we are journeying with - People will come and go and today we celebate all those who have helped us in our Christian journey. It is really important that we support direct and build one another up in the challenges of life and faith. Finally and most importantly, we have the direction of God himself - who speaks in our hearts and minds if only we will learn to listen for him.
Well the journey continues and who knows what tomorrow will bring. I am pleased to say I look forward to journeying on with God and with you in fellowship.
May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back and until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his Hand!
With our love!

An Irish Blessing
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm on your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
May God be with you and bless you,
May you see your children's children.
May you be poor misfortune,
Rich in blessings,
May you know nothing but happiness From this day forward.
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind always be at your back,
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home,
And may the hand of a friend always be near.
May green be the grass you walk on, May blue be the sky above you, May pure be the joys that surround you, May true be the hears that love you.

LYRICS
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin,
My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am Lord, Is it I, Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people's pain.
I have wept for love of them,
they turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak My word to them
Whom shall I send?
I, the Lord of wind and flame
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them,
My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide,
Till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give My life to them,
Whom shall I send?
One more step along the world I go,
One more step along the world I go;
From the old things to the new,
Keep me travelling along with you:
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
Keep me travelling along with you.
Round the corners of the world I turn,
More and more about the world I learn;
All the new things that I see
You'll be looking at along with me.
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
Keep me travelling along with you.
As I travel through the bad and good,
Keep me travelling the way I should.
Where I see no way to go,
You'll be telling me the way, I know.
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
Keep me travelling along with you.
Give me courage when the world is rough,
Keep me loving though the world is tough;
Leap and sing in all I do,
Keep me travelling along with you:
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
Keep me travelling along with you.
You are older than the world can be,
You are younger than the life in me;
Ever old and ever new,
Keep me travelling along with you:
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
Keep me travelling along with you.
We are marching in the light of God,
We are marching in the light of God,
Repeat
We are marching, marching,
We are marching, marching,
We are marching in the light of God.
Repeat
We are living in the love of God.......
We are moving in the power of God.......
Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenkhos'.........

This week we are really blessed as Andy is leading our worship with Helen on music (lyrics are at the end of this message). You will no doubt be relieved it's not Jon again!
One of this week's reading's is from Paul's letter to the Church at Thessalonica. As I read this morning of Paul's warm and happy greeting to the Church his description of Thessalonica made me think at once of parallels with the Church at EMC.
Paul mentions the "welcome we had among you", this resonates with the warm welcome folks so often mention when they come to EMC. That warm welcome is in turn representative of a deep felt love between those in fellowship within our Church. That love pours out to those who come to visit us. We may not always agree, we may not always see eye to eye but there is still a strong sense within EMC of that deeply felt love, shared to/from and with those who imitate Christ.
Imitating Christ is another parallel we can see between those in Thessalonica and EMC. Again in this we may often fail but we are drawn together because we seek a common goal to strive to know him and imitate him more.
Finally, Paul talks of how he remembers them in prayer. EMC is a praying community and it fills me with great joy to know that we are holding each other in prayer through the weeks.
As to our week, half term is fast approaching, and we are very excited to be having a week off :-) School has been different for the children and we will be buying the children thermal underwear this next week; just as the school have suggested. This is because whilst the heating will be on this winter, the windows will be kept open. That will make it a bracing place to learn no doubt! I would need a lot of layers, I'm cold in the heat of summer!
Right I must go edit the video for this week's service. I hope you have had a good week, and will have a blessed weekend and week to come!
With all our love!
Jon, Helen, Josh and Beth!

HARVEST As well as the generous Harvest donations of food for the Food Bank, the wonderful amount of 330 pounds was given in money, which the treasurer will send to help in the great work that the FoodBank does. Once more EMC has shown it's generosity to those less fortunate than ourselves.
FROM THE ARCHIVE
I have joined in this week with a local history group and one of the really exciting resources they shared with me is this tithe map from 1837-1847. If you have a little time to spare you can, as Josh and I did, find some local locations such as the Church, the school and our house :-). None of the buildings are there yet, but the field boundaries and roads remain largly unchanged.
