Notices blog

There's quite a lot to tell you about today so we will crack right on.

Zoom Service
First of all please remember we are having a Zoom service this Sunday evening at 6:30. Di has very kindly planned and organised this special opportunity to gather on-line. The service will be led by our own minister Andy, so if you are able, please join us from 6:30. Details on how to join can be found further down, or get in touch if you need some help.

Church Council
Please also remember we have a Church council meeting by Zoom on the 14th of October. Every Church member can attend the council meeting, only members of the council are allowed to vote.

Samaritan's Purse
It's still possible to donate a shoe box this year. You can either complete one and hand it to Rachel in the usual way. Or this year you can complete one on-line. More details on that can be found here https://shoeboxes.samaritans-purse.org.uk/
If you complete a shoe box please can you pass them to Rachel by November 11th. You can contact her on REDACTED.

Church building security
Some time between noon on Thursday 3rd September 2020 and the morning of Monday 7th September 2020 and again between Thursday 1st October and Tuesday 6th October 2020 one of our keyholders entered the building by the car park doors but when they left they omitted to set the top and bottom bolts before locking the rear door. This meant that the doors could be pulled open and anyone could enter the building. These top and bottom locks must to set before leaving and locking the building securely.

Harvest Collection
Many of you have contributed to the Foodbank collection this week, there has been a fantastic effort to gather food for this great cause. Di has kindly sent me the photo below that shows just some of the things collected. Well done to everyone who has taken part and thank you !

Next Sunday
Next Sunday Andy is hoping to lead our worship on-line in the morning. It should be good so do join us at 10:30 next Sunday for that.

Well another week has gone by and there remains a sense of uncertainty for COVID and the controls the government may seek to apply in their effort to contain it. We don't know yet what the winter may hold. However, we have plenty of positives, not least of all we remain the Church of Christ in Christ and he with us. There are lots of fantastic things being done by all sorts of people at EMCC to continue the work we have been called to, a massive thank you to them, and something to keep the rest of us in higher spirits.

It's been a good week in the Carhart household. The children are enjoying their after school clubs, Beth with multiskills (I'm still not sure what this is) and Josh is now playing basketball. My home office grows week by week looking more like a data centre than a dining room. None the less I have to say it's been a good place to work. Helen brings me cups of tea, biscuits and makes lunch!!

I hope you have a great weekend and week, and I look forward to speaking with some of you this Sunday evening on Zoom.
May the God of love bless you all
With our love
Jon Helen Josh and Beth

This week's service is based on Philippians 3, and it makes such a great segway to one of my favourite songs "All I once Held dear". Its lyrics are as much worship as they are meditation and reflection. It is just a brilliant chance to use it. So, if you get chance join us on-line this week and sing along (the words are at the end of this e-mail).
In terms of notices just a reminder to Church council members that you are meeting on the 14th via Zoom. Thank you to Di for organising it.

A reminder that there are still those in our Church who need your prayers and I hope you will join us Wednesday evenings to continue to pray for one another.

I do love to hear your personal news, so feel free to share that with me especially if you'd like me to share with the wider Church in these notices.

I usually tell you something of the events for the Carhart family - we continue to work away in "Bunker Carhart". The children are enjoying being back at school, although they won't admit that if you ask them! I am being allowed out for the first time this week to preach at Compton's evening service, I am sure it will be different, face masks and all but none the less I am looking forward to it!

I hope this week has been kind to you and you have a blessed and God filled week. As always remember the God of creation, the God of pure love hope and joy is in command, so all must be well! With our love

LYRICS REDACTED FROM ONLINE VERSION

UNSUBSCRIBE If you've had enough of receiving this notice sheet it's easy to unsubscribe. Please just reply to this email with the word UNSUBSCRIBE.

This weeks lectionary reading is Phillipians 2 1-13. The next few weeks are taking us through the start of this letter. At the risk of repeating something Tristan may say I would like to direct you to this portion at the end of the passage.

Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

It carries the sentiment of the entire lectionary passage, that we should be humble, obedient, always thinking of others and that we should be concerned with our own salvation. It is however, the last line that sticks in my mind "to will and work for his good pleasure". We tend to take as much pleasure in seeing someone's face when we pass them a gift as we do in receiving one. In the same way it is a great pleasure to be called to obey God's will and to serve him in mission. As Christians we receive so many gifts from our God. The chance to give back is one we should grasp willingly, with passion and zeal. I will talk more of the zeal, energy and joy of faith next Sunday so for now, suffice it to say we should be overjoyed to be called to obedient service in him.

We have had another exciting week! Josh and Beth have signed up to after school clubs. Beth will be learning "multi-skills" (I'm not sure what that is either but I am hoping there are no "multi-tools" invovled in it!). Josh has decided to undertake a four week basektball course. Raiders here we come !!

It's always good to hear back from you and I was very pleased to discover that I am not the only country music fan, you know who you are :-)

As always With our love
Jon, Helen, Josh and Beth

An Introduction to the Chislett-McDonalds...
First, let me say how delighted Ruth and I are by the welcome we have received in the Plymouth and Devonport Circuit. There has been a real sense of peace and a 'knowing' that this is where God has called us and placed us.
A bit about us. We have been married for 35 years and have two adult children, Simon and Charis. Simon is a physicist completing a PhD, and Charis is both finishing an anthropology masters degree and beginning training to become a teacher. They are currently at Durham University. Ruth is a Driving Examiner. All three of them are musical people, playing a variety of instruments between them; trumpet, French Horn, clarinet, piano and guitar. The nearest I get to this is blowing a whistle when I am refereeing football matches. I have found that refereeing keeps me grounded and gives links into the community, so you will see that l will be refereeing most Saturday's. My other hobby is cooking. Oh, and one other passion is pilgrimage, particularly the Camino de Santiago (500 miles from the Pyrenees and across Northern Spain on foot to Santiago de Compostella).
And now, the main event! We are desperate to see people come into a living, loving relationship with our living, loving Lord Jesus. In church terms, l really do not buy into stories of continuing decline. God is able, God is good. And God longs for people to know him! It is my hope, dream, prayer and certainty that God has great things planned for both the Circuit and all the local churches; so that definitely includes Elburton Methodist Church. Three word slogans seem to be in vogue at the moment. Here's one I appropriated from a friend as a slogan for church and Circuit...Bring, grow, go. BRING people into the life of the church. GROW in faith together, and GO and get others.
We are so pleased to be joining with you. You are in our hearts and prayers.
Andy and Ruth (Simon and Charis)

COFFEE MORNINGS

I hope you are having a good week. I wanted to begin by thanking all of those who took part in our on-line party last week. A new experience but 25 of us met with our new minister Andy and his wife Ruth. It was great to see them and welcome them to EMC. Di has asked me to share Andy's telephone number with you, should you need it, it is REDACTED.

Those who attended may remember Andy mentioned he was looking into opening for communion this Sunday evening. I can confirm that is not the case this week, but we look forward to a time when we can meet. We are blessed to have Tristan leading our worship on-line this week, and I hope you can join us.

I don't know about you but I rarely look to the Psalms appointed each week, that's clearly remiss of me as this week's Psalm proves. This week we have Psalm 103. You can read it here in full Click here . The Psalms are a treasure trove of poetry and often express ideas that we find hard to put into words. These words from Psalm 103 ...
Of David.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and do not forget all his benefits—
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

...are no different. They express beautifully, far better than I can our desire to acknowledge and worship God. To point to him in praise.
Equally they embody something of the Christian message, that God loves us and forgives us, he heals us in body mind and most critically, in soul. It points us to a Christian life on earth that can be renewed and refreshed each day!
So I hope you have a good day, a blessed week and one that is renewed, fresh each morning in the strength, energy and love of God.

If you have any news you'd like me to share with folks via our newsheet do let me know.

As for our news, Josh and Beth returned with many from EMCC to school this week. I think on balance they enjoyed it and the time spent with friends very much! Even if a quiet house was quite odd.

As always remember the God of love is in command so all is be well!
Much love to all of you!

Another week has leapt on by and we are well and truly into September. For us the children are back into the swing of school and moving onto their new classes this week (they spent the first two weeks in their previous year groups). In this week's service we are looking at Matthew 20 1-16. Our service is titled "No charge" and if you don't know the song I was thinking of at the time you can have a listen on YouTube and I have included some links below. I have included several as, to be honest, I can't decide which version I prefer lots of people have covered it Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Melba Montgomery (all of them are beautiful). OK, that's my musical taste out of the bag!
As we look at this week's reading about the vineyard and think about what pay the workers can claim for their efforts, what we can claim the reality, I hope, becomes clear. We have no right to expect anything, God's answer to us is for all I have done there is NO CHARGE!

We are really lucky this week to have an introduction from our Minister Rev Andy Chislett-McDonald. So please do read on to find that!

Remember the God of creation and love is in command, so all is well!
